In this edition Volunteers of the Month: Emily Houdeshell, Andrew Haney, and Julie Clemençon Many thanks to three outstanding volunteers who supported Greenbelt Alliance's 18th annual Bay Area bike tour, Go Greenbelt!. Emily Houdeshell, our Go Greenbelt! intern, recently graduated from Santa Clara University. While simultaneously finishing college and launching her career, Emily worked on the educational component of Go Greenbelt!. She coordinated policy briefings for riders, and helped plan a press conference where riders called for more walkable, bike-friendly development in Santa Rosa’s downtown. (Unfortunately, we couldn't get a photo of Emily, so she's not in the picture above.) Andrew Haney, a student at San Francisco State University, donated his time and impressive photographic talent to documenting Go Greenbelt!. From the windy summit of Mt. Hamilton to the vineyards and forests of Sonoma County, Andy recorded images of the landscapes theride helps to protect. (You can tell Andy is a photographer – he sent us a ready-to-montage image of himself!) Julie Clemençon hailed from farthest away: a Parisian intern enrolled in an English immersion program, Julie pulled together a reunion party for Go Greenbelt! riders. Julie is an experienced event fundraiser who once helped plan an anti-AIDS rally of a half-million people! Julie also assisted Greenbelt Alliance’s Livable Communities Outreach Team in planning its recent Urban Outing to downtown Mountain View. These volunteers’ hard work helped make Go Greenbelt! a success. Thank you, Emily, Andy, and Julie!
Action Alert: Help Green Santa Rosa’s Downtown Plan The City of Santa Rosa is planning to redevelop the area around its Railroad Square train station. This is an opportunity to make the city’s downtown a walkable, bike-friendly place to live, work and shop, with green buildings and homes people can afford. We need to make city leaders accountable to their constituents! People have sent in hundreds of letters asking for affordable housing, green building, public parks and plazas, and adequate bike parking. The Planning Commission cannot ignore these requests any longer. Come to a hearing to tell them so.

Action Alert: Call for a Good Future for the Concord Naval Weapons Station The City of Concord is hosting a community workshop to discuss alternatives for the future of the Naval Weapons Station. This meeting is the final opportunity for the public to weigh in before the City Council decides on the alternatives it will study in the Environmental Impact Report, starting in September. City planners and Councilmembers need to hear your strong support for a good alternative for the base. At least one of the alternatives should include a regional park, endangered species protection, and creek restoration, and should create a walkable community around the BART station with new homes and job opportunities. Please speak up for a good plan for the base!
Action Alert: Help Create Affordable Homes in Vallejo Next Thursday, the Solano Housing Coalition—of which Greenbelt Alliance is a member—will plan its final push to pass an inclusionary housing ordinance in Vallejo. An inclusionary housing ordinance in Vallejo will ensure that new residential developments include a percentage of affordable homes. It will help local workers, seniors, and young people who are currently priced out of the market. Providing homes people can afford in cities like Vallejo reduces the pressure to build on open space and reduces long commutes, traffic, and pollution. The coalition is gearing up for a Planning Commission meeting in August and a City Council meeting in September. Join us in reaching out to Vallejo citizens to let them know about the issue and help them make their voices heard!
