Feature: Smart Infill Guidebook Released

Greenbelt Alliance's newest publication, Smart Infill, provides the essential tools to create walkable neighborhoods, just as awareness increases about the connection between land use and climate change.

Released on the same date as the October 1 signing of SB 375, California's landmark bill linking land use and climate change, Smart Infill is an indispensable tool for the region’s planners and elected officials.

"Greenbelt Alliance's new guidebook will give local leaders practical tools to encourage climate-friendly development in their communities," said State Senator Darrell Steinberg, author of SB 375.

Smart Infill is the practical guidebook to help the Bay Area grow smarter. Get your copy today! Copies are $10 each; email info@greenbelt.org or call (415) 543-6771 to order.

Action Alert: Support Affordable Homes in Marin

On October 14, the Marin Board of Supervisors will be voting on an ordinance that would help create new, affordable homes close to jobs and transportation. The ordinance would use a fee from the construction of single-family homes to help fund the creation of affordable homes.

A local study showed that every new single-family home built in Marin creates the need for additional low-cost homes. The reason: each house creates more demand for landscapers, daycare workers, teachers, retail workers, and tradespeople, who need affordable places to live too.
We need your voice! Call or write the supervisors to let them know you support the proposed affordable housing impact fee.

When: 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 14
Where: 3501 Civic Center Drive, Board of Supervisors Chamber, Room 330, San Rafael
Contact: njohnson@greenbelt.org or (415) 491-4993

Action Alert: Concord Plans Look Smart

Success! At the last public workshop for the future use of the Concord Naval Weapons Station, more than 200 supporters spoke in favor of conserving land and clustering homes. Our efforts impelled the City of Concord to change its original sprawling reuse plans to better follow smart growth principles.

We still need your help! On October 14 and 21, the Community Advisory Committee will make a final decision on the plans that will govern where development and open space will be on the former base. After the committee makes its recommendation, the City Council will pick a final development plan in January.

Greenbelt Alliance needs you to speak up at these upcoming meetings:

When: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 14 and October 21
Where: Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle, Concord

Help us get the word out! Join us on the evening of Monday, October 13 to call supporters to attend these key meetings. To volunteer to make phone calls, contact Marla Wilson at (415) 543-6771 x308 or mwilson@greenbelt.org.

Action Alert: Speak Up in Sunnyvale

Support smart growth in Sunnyvale! The proposed Luminaire development in Sunnyvale, endorsed by Greenbelt Alliance, will create 338 homes close to a light-rail line as well as retail and open space. The development is a step towards a more sustainable South Bay, where residents can take transit or walk to get wherever they want to go.

Come to a Planning Commission meeting and testify on the importance of building affordable homes near transit and shops. Greenbelt Alliance will provide the needed information.

Planning Commission: 8 p.m., Monday, October 13
City Council: 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 18
Where: 456 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale
Contact: mwilson@greenbelt.org or (415) 543-6771 x308

Volunteer of the Month: Carolyn Roose

"Carolyn Roose spent this summer interning with Greenbelt Alliance's Compact Development Team in our San Francisco office. Though she is now in her senior year at Connecticut College, Carolyn's Oakland roots meant she knew our region well.

She kept the endorsements program running smoothly and played a major role in shaping our successful Aug. 16 urban outing along the North First Street Corridor in San Jose.

Thanks for your hard work, Carolyn!
